Since the first heart transplant was performed in 1967, heart transplantation has
grown worldwide. This 33rd adult heart transplant report is based on data submitted
to the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) Registry on
118,788 heart transplants in recipients of all ages (including 113,472 adult heart
transplants) through June 30, 2015. This year’s report focuses on primary diagnostic
indications for transplant. We present data on the distribution of diagnostic categories,
demographics of patients with the different heart disorders leading to the need for
transplant (Figure 1), associations of the diagnoses with outcomes, and other data of interest related
to this topic.
