We are pleased to present the 2009 Annual Reports of the Scientific Registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (the Registry). Since 1983 the Registry has collected and reported data for more than 117,000 heart, heart-lung, and lung transplants. The past year has been our most active to date, with 5,276 transplants added to the Registry from more than 225 centers worldwide. Much gratitude is owed the many heart and lung transplant surgeons and physicians, clinical coordinators, data coordinators, and organ exchange organizations (OEO) throughout the world, whose timely and accurate submission of data has made attaining these milestones possible (Appendix). We are especially pleased to announce our new relationship with the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT), which reported, for the first time, lung transplants performed at 8 Spanish centers.
This year, we again report some transitions in Registry report authorship: First, Dr Josef Stehlik coauthored the Adult Heart Transplant report; Dr. Stehlik will assume the position of Associate Medical Director from Dr. David Taylor, who has served extremely ably in that capacity since 2002. We also regret the passing of Dr. Mark Boucek, who authored the Pediatric Heart and Lung Transplant Registry report from its inception in 1997 until 2007. The very existence of this report reflected the determination of Dr. Boucek and other pediatric members to give pediatric transplantation a specific identity within the Society.
There are many ways to access the Transplant Registry data. As in past years, all of the data figures and tables included in the Registry reports are also available on the ISHLT Web site (www.ishlt.org/registries) in MS PowerPoint (Microsoft Corp, Bellingham, WA) format. The Web site also contains many additional data slides that are not included in the published reports. Those wishing to view the published Heart, Lung, and Heart-Lung, and Pediatric reports online may do so at www.cardiosource.com.
In addition to the information available in the published Registry reports and slide sets, continent-specific and center-specific data reports can be obtained from the secure section of the ISHLT Web site (www.ishlt.org). Continent-specific reports are available to everyone and allow comparison of continent-specific transplant data with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. Center-specific reports allow comparison of one's individual center with that of all transplants submitted to the Registry. These reports are available to all actively participating centers, including those submitting data through organ exchange organizations. Because we only want staff members affiliated with each center to access center-specific reports from their own center, center-specific reports require a user name and password, which can be obtained from Kathryn Philibin ([email protected]).
We were pleased that 4 abstracts based on Registry data were presented at this year's ISHLT Scientific Sessions in Paris, France: (1) “Focusing on the Future: Development of a Predictive Model for Long-Term Survival,” presented by Dr. Cynthia Gries; (2) “Body Mass Index as Predictor of Pediatric Heart Transplant Outcome,” presented by Dr. Beth Kaufman; (3) “Predictors of Obesity in Children after Heart Transplant,” presented by Dr. Beth Kaufman; and (4) “Quantitation of the Effect of Donor-Associated Characteristics on Post-Transplant Survival,” presented by Dr. Josef Stehlik. These presentations illustrate the ongoing commitment of the Society and the Registry to the promotion of scholarship and the development of new clinical investigators.
The Registry remains the world's most comprehensive record of heart and lung transplant activity, practices, and outcomes; and a resource for ongoing research regarding these continually evolving areas of practice. In a recent survey, the ISHLT membership indicated that the Registry is one of the 3 most valuable activities of the Society, together with the Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. We appreciate the ongoing commitment by the Society and its members to the continued health and growth of this valuable resource.
