Pathologic regression of primary pulmonary hypertension in left native lung following right single-lung transplantation

A 40-year-old female underwent right single-lung transplantation for primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). The patient survived for 9 years subsequent to the transplant. At autopsy, pathologic examination demonstrated partial resolution of the characteristic findings of primary pulmonary hypertension in the native lung of the patient, compared to the characteristic findings of primary pulmonary hypertension in the right lung explant obtained 9 years previously. This case report supports a role for hemodynamic alterations in the pathogenesis of primary pulmonary hypertension.
